"If you hate the idea of thinking at the movies, this is for you."
3 stars

Okay, so Frank Darabont did a pretty bangup job bringing "The Shawshank Redemption" to the screen. But that's in the past. It doesn't mean that he should a) direct a lot more Stephen King jailhouse melodramas in the future or b) have complete control over all aspects of his films--because this is what happens.

A movie that runs three hours and fifteen minutes and goes absolutely nowhere in the long run. There is no single point to be taken from this film, since there is no single ending. The film is based on a novel in serial form by Stephen King, and some hemming is obviously required to bring that kind of thing to life.

Frank Darabont didn't work very hard at tying everything up and making it flow. I imagine him sitting at his type writer with a stack of books on the side, and he's reading them and scripting as he goes. As a consequence, there are too many endings--each character has their own personal plot-resolution, and these come at twenty-five to thirty minute intervals. So while individual scenes work (and are fun in their elaborate construction), they never form a coherent whole.

Story problems aside, I'll give some credit to the dialogue. It's rather snappy, especially for this kind of movie. A lot of the scenes play out quite nicely until unnecessary exposition gets in the way. A character will drop a little hint, you'll catch it, and then the next person who speaks will open it up and dissect it for the audience.

That's why the movie is so long, really--we're shown too many things we can infer and even the slightest of themes are explained in minute detail. That also explains why "The Green Mile" ceases to be fun after the first forty five minutes or so--once you lost the option to think for yourself, there's really no point in watching a film.

The only really good things about the movie that remain unmarred by Frank Darabont's big hammy fists are the performances. David Morse and Tom Hanks stand out the most, as they have the biggest roles, but a solid backbone is built and maintained by James Cromwell, Doug Hutchison, and Sam Rockwell.

And Michael Duncan--no review would be complete without mention of Duncan, who plays John Coffey, a big simpleminded black man who gets wrongly placed on death row. This wouldn't be Stephen King without some supernatural stuff, though, so Coffey has special healing powers and touches the lives of everyone he meets.

Duncan, to his credit, does a fair job and succeeds in making you care about a criminally underwritten character, but the movie would have been SO much more interesting if his character were smarter. It would have added snap and spark and lifted everything else up.

In the end, "The Green Mile" ain't good and it ain't bad. It's just a movie, like any other, that's enjoyable in parts and not so enjoyable in others. It's just average.
