"Wesley Snipes officially becomes the poor man's Wesley Snipes."
1 stars

Characters who speak in expository paragraphs. A climactic scene in which our hero gets the drop on his nemesis, only to engage him in a fair-n-square old school gunfight. No less than three scenes where a prinicpal baddie explains his/her nefarious scheme in great detail. And an obvious rookie behind the camera, indulging in expensive, misplaced "Matrix"-style effects to hide the fact this his movie makes no sense.

Did someone script this? I'm really curious. Because there's no plot. I don't mean that the filmmakers went with something bare bones and generic; they went with nothing at all. We know Wesley's on the run. We know that there is a shadowy conspiracy that involves every single Chinese person in New York. But the rest?

There IS no rest.

"The Art of War" is a showy, preposterous thriller that not only completely fails dramatically, but lacks the energy to work itself up into the kind of laughably intense frenzy that even Steven Segal occasionally musters. In the simplest of terms, it's a dead movie. There's no pull, no flow; it lurches from scene to scene with a glazy-eyed detachment that would make Schumacher proud.

Actually, Schumacher would punch the material up with homo-erotic subtext and candy colored street lights; he might even fit in a rubber codpiece. At least that kind of stuff is funny. "The Art of War" is not even remotely humorous or entertaining; it is probably the most serious action film I have ever seen. And definitely one of the very worst.

At this point, I would explain the basic premise of the film, but I didn't understand it. A lot of the characters referred to a treaty with China. But they didn't explain what the treaty would accomplish. At one point, a confused character actually wonders aloud what the treaty is. Nobody bothers to respond, because they either don't know, or don't want to waste their big "explanation" scene on something so arbitrary. I tend to think it's a bit of both.

More pressing than plot concerns is the question of Wesley Snipes' current, irritatingly stoic persona. In an early scene here, he mocks Eddie Murphy. For smiling. It seems as if Snipes has reconciled being a talented dramatic actor in big budget crapfests like this by - wait for it - not grinning. Yes, he will whore himself for Da Man, but in no way will he enjoy the experience!

Blah unknowns comprise the rest of the cast, with the (barely) notable exception of Donald Sutherland. Tell me, folks: When Donny kicks it, who's going to fill the role of Old White Guy in all these generic action movies? I doubt even Jon Voight would lower himself to this level of trash.

Unspeakably bad. I got in free and then asked for a refund.
