"This movie thinks it's a little more special than what it actually is"
First things first, "Bagger Vance" isn't the brilliant epic
one might have hoped for. The cast, the Director, the ambition
it reflects... it all doesn't measure up to that size an epic.
However, "Bagger Vance", as predictable as it is, is a
delight to watch.Redford directs Damon as a former war hero of the 20's who is enlisted, thanks to his persuasive Savannah, to take on two golf pro's in a charity tournament. A little reluctant at first, but he is soon roped into it but not only the townfolk, but by one time flame and rich girl, Theron, and Bagger Vance (Smith) a mysterious man who volunteers himself Damon's caddy. Bagger Vance teaches him a lot more than golf and along the way the young golfer also wins the hearts of the crowd and gets his swing back. A nice little movie that could have been better. It kind of avoids a few things - like telling us more about Bagger Vance. He kind of turns up, shakes things up and leaves. hmmm. The sports angle is pretty prominent, but it's filmed in a
great way, that makes it a pleasure to watch anyway.
Damon and Smith play their parts well, as does the under
rated Charlize Theron.
