Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas |

Remind me to never...NEVER...see a movie that seems like one acid trip after another while under the influence of even one glass of Merlot. It's just a plain bad idea. Motion sickness, here I come.Regardless of the motion sickness and half-drunkenness, Fear and Loathing was a perfectly acceptable way to spend a Thursday night after eating some damn good linguine with clam sauce, courtesy of my best friend.
Johnny Depp. Well, I associate Mr. Depp with movies like Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands, a kind of quiet, misunderstood character. Even Dead Man had its moments. But in Fear and Loathing, Johnny Depp becomes something completely other, and if someone hadn't told me, I never would have guessed. Where did all that good acting come from? It's eerie...one of the flashback scenes, Johnny's character runs into himself. Literally. Whoshisface who wrote the book is in the scene, and he and Johnny are identical. It's creepy...in fact, Johnny sums it up quite well: "Holy fuck!"
The cinematography is fabulous; even after I sobered up I felt like there was some substance circulating through my system that made me see things in a distorted manner. (That could have been due to the hotel carpet onscreen, though.) The acting is great. The plot makes sense if you're paing attention: Two journalists are driving to Las Veags to cover a dune-buggy race, which they completely miss due to the copious amounts of every drug imaginable they are carrying. They pick up a hitchhiker, who gets freaked out and leaves. They make it to LV, trash a hotel room, cover the first five minutes of the race, and head back to LA. Halfway there, they get called back to LV to cover the national District Attorneys' Conference. Another hotel, another rental car, another fake identity, another trashed room. And tons of people turning into lizards.Overall, I liked it. Good deal, but I'm too tired and too wasted on Merlot to write any more tonight.
