Run Lola Run |

"As always, third time's the charm."

Likely to go down as one of the all-time great German classics, with Das Boot, etc. What a perfect movie.HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THIS FILM???
...because that's what it is, after all. Film. It's artistic and innovative and doesn't show titties for no other reason than to attract pubescent boys. Not a movie. Movies (did anyone else rad MAD magazine's comparison of Films and Movies? It's perfect but about eight years old.) are old and don't, as a rule, break new ground. I also just realized that I'm only reviewing movies/films that I really, really like. Oh well.
Run Lola Run is the story of a young woman (who isn't gorgeous or sticklike in her thinness, and she has really bad taste in clothes. Maybe I should watch German exports more often instead of drinking them.) Lola gets a call from her gorgeous, but misguided in that he's trying to run items for organized crime, boyfriend Manni, who has just lost $100,000 on the subway to a homeless man. Manni has 20 minutes to get the money back or face death at the hands of his boss, and to that end, he will rob the grocery store in front of his pay phone if Lola hasn't saved him already. Lola assures Manni that she'll figure something out and proceeds to run all over the town she's in--I think it's Kassel, someone can correct me--to get the money. She leaps down the stairs in a fabulous animated sequence and we discover that her mother is having an affair. Lola ends up at the bank where her father is a manager, and we discover that he's just gotten his mistress pregnant. A really cool aspect of this movie is that we, literally in some cases, run into three people and proceed to flash forward through their lives. It's a neat effect.
Anyway, Lola's dad isn't too keen on giving up the money, but Lola runs to the market where Manni is waiting for her. She is less than a minute late when Manni walks into the store and robs it. Disastrous.
We run through the scenario again. Slightly different ending.
Three's the charm. The third time, they finally get it right. (The people we bump into the first time reappear the second and third times, and their circumstances differ drastically from instance to instance in order to display that the tiniest changes in a life can alter its couse dramatically.)
The acting is fabulous and the film is artfully made. Kudos to directors and cast for Run Lola Run. Keep up the great work!I can't wait to see the next project this talented group comes up with. Run, People, Run!
