Finally, an action movie with well rounded and evolving characters that doesn't skimp on the ACTION!I love action movies. I love the Die Hard flicks. It is most most disapointing when I go see an action movie that tries to have a heart and fails. Its as if they wasted good bullet or kung fu time on a 'plotline'. Three Kings actually succeeded.
First, the characters were differentiated and complex. They all were not simply cardboard cutouts of a stereotypical military man. The Three Kings (Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze) all had distinct personalities of their own and all three actors brought a great comic sensibility to their roles (esp. Jonze who totally KICKED ASS in this film - that guy should be in front of the camera more often). One of my only slight complaints is George Clooney's character, Archie Gates. The character was extremely cool and slightly grizzled. The character itself was fine and he really interacted well and served as a pseudo-mentor for the kings, but its the casting that somewhat bothers me. Grizzled, cocky, cool-as-a-cucumber, tough guy. Sound familiar? Yes, it's the same character that Clooney ALWAYS PLAYS. I'm starting to get a little deja-vu everytime I see a Clooney role. He's really good at it, but I'd really like to see him branch out and play something else.
This was also an action movie where the villains were not stereotypically evil. They showed the reasons behind the neglected feelings of all of the Iraquis, whether part of the rebellion or the Republican Guard. It's much easier to accept and understand a conflict when the motivations of the aggressor are explained. The scene where Mark Wahlberg's character is being tortured is one of the most well crafted and written examples of personal horror.
The moral questions in this movie are ones that all of us really should think about. What were we doing there? Why did we leave? How much of our collective "soul" are we willing to give up in the name of world domination? I don't know the answers to these questions, but I really appreciate that we are at a point now where we can actually ask them. This movie will rock your world with great action scenes, hysterical comedy, and touching/thought provoking concepts.
