(Worth A Look)
Electric Dreams is a study in the terrifying effects of unchecked technology. Its a fiercely brutal portrayal of the enslavement of mankind by its own technology. Its a love story with a theme song by Culture Club.
Which is the whole reason I saw this movie in the first place. But then, Miles, the computer owner, played by Lenny Von Dohlen was so cute that I wasn't bored sitting around waiting for the end of the movie when I'd get to hear "The Song".
Being fourteen is like that.
And I had to wait an entire year before being validated by The Breakfast Club.
So Mr. Proto Computer User gets one those fancy new Home Computers and programs it to control all his householdy functions, like lights and doors and coffee makers. So far we are right in a Ray Bradbury story and you know something has to got to go wrong.
It does. He spills soda on his computer and the short-circuiting effect causes the computer to become Self-Aware! Man, computers were just so all powerful in the mid-eighties. In Tron, In Weird Science, in War Games, they could make dreams and nightmares come true. They still do, take this review for instance. Dream? ... or Nightmare?
Hold your loved ones, this shit is freaky. The computer is smart and can lock the doors. And the computer and the man begin to fight for the affection of the female cello player next door.
It's a study in the terrifying effects of unchecked technology. Its a fiercely brutal portrayal of the enslavement of mankind by its own technology. On some level. I'm sure its there.
Else, its just beautiful people, a flimsy plot, an old idea but a surprisingly tight story structure and "The Song" (Electric Dreams Theme) by Culture Club. Its worth watching because it still exists in the "potential near future" even if the clothes are a little dated. The suspension of disbelief necessary in our tech savvy times will contribute to the enjoyment of a high-tech fairy tale where they do all live happily ever after. Except the computer, who puts up one hell of a bitch fight binary style.
