Lost Highway

"Perhaps I missed something."
1 stars

"Lost Highway" rolls along smoothly for about two and a half hours. Weird shit happens, there's lot of nudity, some catchy industrial music to accompany the warped visuals, and then at the end, you're waiting for that final piece of the puzzle--and it never comes. The movie, just like Bill Pullman, speeds off, without explanation, without thought.

When it was over it dawned on me that I may have missed the link.

But I don't think I did. Here's what I think: Davey Lynch had a bunch of cool images floating around in his mind, and he wanted to immortalize them on celluloid. But he was too lazy to actually construct a plot. And Lynch, at this point in his career, seems all too willing to capitalize on his status as art house savior.

"I don't need a plot," says Mister Lynch. "I'm David fucking Lynch, for chrissakes."

People will see your movie, Dave, and enough of them will call it brilliant. But a huge majority of your fans are losing faith in you.

I, for instance, remember the David Lynch of old--the guy who could make movies like "Wild at Heart" and "Blue Velvet." I mean, the method was as insane as the madness, but there was structure and there were definite ideas.

With "Lost Highway," Lynch has assembled a group of pointless scenes that, along with not making sense, don't even compliment each other. There's no reason here, and I think that's the element that appeals to most of this picture's fan base.

The film moves, that can be said. By crafting his movie this nonsensically, Lynch has taken away the fourth wall--by completely disowning logic and workable narrative, he makes this our experience.

It's a unique experiment in existential filmmaking, but an experiment that doesn't work. The movie never gels, never becomes more than the incoherent sum of its parts. Lynch pays no attention to flow--he jams the scenes together and expects them to form connections.

I'm not exactly sure whether to call "Lost Highway" a thoughtful new style that fails or filmmaking at its laziest. I do, though, know one thing to be true:

This movie sucks.
