Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)

"Please note that this rating is actually for the MST3K version."
4 stars

I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time.

And at the time it was in the middle of America's space race with the Soviets, when everybody was still overtly fascinated with the moon, Mars and other planets in the solar system. Somebody in Hollywood got a wild hare and suggested "Hey, let's put together a Christmas special featuring Santa Claus getting involved with Martians! And we'll include that guy from 'Bewitched' in the whole thing!"

Well, the movie sure seemed hastily put together. The plot involving Martian parents scheming to kidnap Santa to bring Christmas cheer to their Martian children (one of them a prepubescent Pia Zadora) was half-baked... or is there such a thing as quarter-baked...

By itself, "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" is a fruitcake of a stinker. For maximum entertainment value, get the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of this film. Like they've done with many other cinematic clunkers, the guys at Best Brains inject enough wisecracks and extra comedy material (even a song!) to make this film a hoot.

"Hooray for Santy Claus"? SANTY???? Blecch... somebody get me a South Park Xmas show right away!
