"A fresh, racy and authentic insight into the world of club culture."
4 stars

While Go looked to score off Pulp Fiction, and Trainspotting sought class-A hipness, Human Traffic is a pure hit. It deals up a fresh, racy and authentic insight into the world of club culture. Following the weekend clubland crusades of Jip (Simm) and his mad-for-it friends, it’s like watching a sincere cinematic personal diary, packed full of sexual and social paranoia, love and pill popping.

The heart of this drug buddy weekender doesn’t have a superficial beat. The revelation of Kerrigan’s film is its earnest approach in the way it deals with its characters. Devoid of any cool, you’ll find insecurity, sensitivity and a lot of foolishness. They’re easy to identify with - they’re your friends or, if you’re not that way inclined, they’re the people you see every weekend larging it up.

Visually, the film is like one big, bright colourful narcotic experience, spiraling through the worlds of fantasy, surrealism and gritty reality. It’s packed full of lewd and fun moments - a spliff shaman dream sequence, bedroom masturbation, cockney (“guv’nor”, “nice one!”) wide boy talk. Scoring all this frantic action is a pumping, stealth like techno soundtrack straight out of Pete Tong’s smokin’ record bag.

A few moments of wince inducing farce through over staging (a whole pub singing an ironic national anthem) provides an unnecessary sugary taste to the undoubted humour of the film. Yet the novice cast on show are always likeable enough to pull through any such embarrassments.

Ultimately, Human Traffic stands as an important achievement. It’s never reckless in the face of the moral ethic of youth drug culture. Simultaneously, it never patronizes the audience who will identify with its themes. It clearly stands as a truthful representation of the biggest youth movement ever: nineties club culture. Whether it’s too honest to achieve the cool cult status of a film like Quadrophenia is another matter.

But for now...who cares. Get amongst it, feel the vibe and get yourself sorted. ---David Michael
