Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The

"Tony (goes to) Roma."
4 stars

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, which marks Dario Argento's directorial debut, is the story of an American writer, Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante), who, while on a visit to Rome, witnesses an attempted murder at an art gallery. In an effort to come to the victim's aid, he becomes trapped between a double set of glass doors. Questioned by police, who consider him their most likely suspect and confiscate his passport, he becomes embroiled in the hunt for a serial killer who is terrorizing the local young women.

Although, at the end of the day, the plot stands up not at all to the minutest degree of scrutiny and the acting ranges from not bad (Musante) to atrocious (Suzy Kendall, as his girlfriend, Julia), there's a whole lot to enjoy in Bird, starting with the panache of Argento's direction, Vittorio Storaro's atmospheric and beautiful photography, and Ennio Morricone's haunting score.

Also at the end of the day, it is a stylish and suspenseful little thriller in which Hitchcockian twists abound, that had me, more than once, on the edge of my seat with my heart pumping hard.
