The Kid. Russ Duritz, as a grown up Bruce Willis is a “dogless, chickless jerk with a twitch,” and when his 8-year-old version shows up in his house, he tries to block out the terrible childhood memories associated with the kid’s embonpoint and wimpiness. The duo is forced to stay together for lack of alternatives, and it’s supposed to be a life-altering experience particularly for the unhappy elder. Designed as a family vehicle, the trite movie is actually quite devoid of most youngster interest, and writer Audrey Wells (who made an impressionable directorial debut with Guinevere) does nothing to sustain that interest except for the occasional visual draw or comic situation, but everything else is either over the head of the children, or much too underwhelming for any adult or adolescent participant. The message is a contrived one anyway, with a kecklish love-plot, but director Jon Turteltaub knows how to lay on the sap and spread the dreck. And what’s with Bruce Willis’ characters suddenly not being able to be seen? Is this Sixth Sense gig of his beginning to be his new trend?

With Spencer Breslin, Lily Tomlin, Emily Mortimer, Chi McBride and Matthew Perry.

Final Verdict: D.
