Cast Away |

"I can only deal with a bloodied volleyball for so long, folks."

The following words come to mind when I remember Cast Away: good acting, good script, predictable, long, nauseating---maybe once again I was not in the right frame of mind for the movie. But really, I was not all that impressed. The individual aspects were impressive. Tom Hanks was incredible and probably the only actor who could play the role. The movie as a whole, though, I really could not get into. Something didn't sit right in my head. Not impressed.Tom Hanks is one of my all-time favorite actors. From the beginning--well, for me, anyway; I'm only 19 and one of the first movies I remember seeing with my parents was Big. The keyboard scene gets me every time. It seems that Hanks has just gotten better with time. His work in Apollo 13 was impressive. I guess the Oscar nods really just make the point. He'll probably get another one for Cast Away, and it would be well deserved. I can't think of another actor who could pull off an hour or so of straight camera time with virtually nothing to interact with except a volleyball.
That Hanks did a fabulous job with an exceptionally difficult role does not make Cast Away a good movie, though. Like I said, the individual aspects were great. The cinematography was incredible. Helen Hunt did a pretty decent job. The concept was good. However, there was something about the movie as a whole that didn't sit well with me. I can't put a finger on it, either, and it's definitely not big enough to say flat-out that I didn't like it. It was just weird. The opening sequence really flipped me out, too. I got seasick from the package-cam. The seasickness continued through the plane crash and intensified during the strobe effects, which REALLY got to me. These reasons, and since they all came in about the first twenty minutes, I was turned off the whole rest of the film. Plus, I've hated Chris Noth for as long as I can remember.
I was also not big on seeing Tom Hanks get injured quite that frequently, but that's just me getting queasy. I hate seeing injuries in movies and that whole tooth thing just freaked me the hell out. (Thank you to the really nice cousin of my best friend who kindly lent his shoulder to be dug into during that) Bah. I don't like blood.
I HATED, absolutely hated, the end of the movie. How cheesy can you get? How unbelievably trite! Maybe one of the reasons I couldn't get into the movie were all the inane cliches. Hanks saying "I'll be right back"--- ARGH! Hunt getting married? No, we couldn't see that coming a mile off. I'm getting sarcastic. Time to stop.Cast Away was worth the money to see in the theater, but it was not the best movie I have seen lately. Go simply to see Tom Hanks, because he was definitely worth it.
