"I laughed, she cried...and oh yeah - Hope Davis is a babe."
5 stars

I almost feel bad calling NEXT STOP WONDERLAND a chick movie; I guess that's because I normally use the term derisively. This time, though, I mean it in the best possible way.

This movie gives chick movies a good name. It has an excellent cast, and it is honest about how realtionships, dating, and just plain life really are, and still manages to be really entertaining.

It stars Hope Davis as a young woman who lives in Boston and works as a nurse. I had never seen Hope Davis before this film, and I now hope to see her in as many as possible. She succeeds in playing a character who is a bit jaded, even sad, in her loneliness, and somehow is still likeable. Probably because she seems smart and pragmatic. For those attracted to women, too, it also helps that she is, as they say, easy on the eyes.

First thing in the movie, there is a very funny scene in which Hope's boyfriend is moving out of her apartment, and thereby her life. He is taking most of the stuff they both used, although she persuades him to leave her cat, Fidel. He is off to save the whales, or rescue persecuted Native Americans, or something like that. He is played by the shambling Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was the boom mike operator with a crush on Mark Whalberg in BOOGIE NIGHTS. This guy is rapidly becoming one of my favorite character actors.

So the rest of the movie follows Hope as she goes along in her new state of dating-eligibility. Her mom takes out a personals ad for her (without herpermission, of course), and suddenly she's got 68 voicemail messages.

Simultaneously, we meet a regular guy who is also likeable, also single, and, we know, bound to meet Hope by the end of the movie (Ah, but it's all in the getting there!). He is still in school as a marine biologist, and he lives with his irritatingly yuppie brothers. The brothers answer Hope's ad and take a bet on which of them can hook up with her first, but our hero declines to participate in such a degrading scheme. Hilarity ensues as the others are each dealt with, though.

The film's only detour concerns a side-plot in which the biologist is under the thumb of some mobsters who are financing his education, and need him to use his position working at the local aquarium to help them threaten the zoo's supervisors over a construction deal. It's kind of an amusing episode, as it turns out, but it had me wondering if this cute movie was going to turn into RESERVOIR DOGS or something. Fortunately, it doesn't.

Of course, our cute people finally meet, and I'm not giving anything away by saying that. But like I say, it's all in how we get there. You'll want to take the trip.
