Akira Kurosawa directs and Toshiro Mifune stars in this family drama (is that what you call it?) in post-Hiroshima Japan.Mifune stars as the aging head of the Nakajima family, who has become obsessed with fear of being bombed. He wants to sell his foundry and move the entire family to a farm in Brazil, but the family is reluctant and seeks the decision of a court to decide who has the final say in the matter.
As far as Kurosawa movies go, its not the best, but Kurosawa is, so its all good. The movie doesn't have samurai or huge battle scenes, but it does a good job of exploring the paranoia of nuclear attack that surely arises when half your country is levelled by kichiku beihei (dirty American devils) One of the investigators of the court helps us to sympathize with both sides of the family and we all walk away feeling that we've grown a little inside. Well maybe not that last part, but its still a good movie. There's other Kurosawa/Mifune movies you need to see first, but if you've seen them, see this next... yeah.
