"A remake of Zulu, with machine guns instead of spears"
3 stars

Due to the exquisite detail of modern warfare contained in Mark Bowden's book Black Hawk Down, it would take a film of four to five hours to do it full justice, but in two-and-a-half hours, Ridley Scott makes a good fist of it. Forget the metaphoric poetry of Thin Red Line, the savvy optics of The Three Kings or the tacked on bookend stars and stripes sentimentality that almost spoiled Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down gives you war straight to the gut.

Despite starting with all the trademarks of a typical war film - Hoo-ha troops mixed with nervous first timers going into battle to a Hendrix soundtrack - Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down after it’s token intro, goes battle ballistic, serving up one of the most realistic depictions of war on the big screen to date.

So realistic is the experience of war in the film, you wouldn't be surprised if Scott declared he had actually been in Somalia in 1993 with the US Rangers and Deltas, and this film is the footage he recorded on the 3rd October - when the shit-hit-the-fan on the Ranger's mission to capture two of General Aidid's men.

With it’s documentary sensibility, there’s no room for heighten big screen pyrotechnics; by sticking to the facts and reality, Scott still creates a film that is visually stunning and full of brutal impact: From stunning chopper sequences to the suffering of troops trapped in desperate conflict.

The biggest surprise of the on-screen action is the lack of evidence that this is a Jerry Bruckheimer production. Unlike Top Gun, which became the greatest ever recruitment ad for the US Airforce, Black Hawk Down is sterilised of any ‘Go America’ sentiment. Offering little sympathy to the characters, it's like an anti-Bruckheimer movie - especially when taking into account his previous ham fisted war epic, Pearl Habour.

Heading up the film’s impressive cast is Pearl Habour surviver Josh Hartnett, who lays down his sombre 'less is more' approach to acting, as the film's understated lead Sergeant Eversmann. Surrounding him is a bunch of non-American actors: Aussie Eric Bana (Chopper), as Delta ‘Hoot’ gets the best lines and does the best accent, while the honour of most limp-wristed American accent goes to Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge). His character Grimes is a break from the literal adaptation of Bowden’s book with his character supposedly based on several Rangers who actually fought in the battle. Closer inspection reveals he is actually directly based on the coffee making/desk clerk, Ranger Stebbins, who is now actually serving a sentence for 30 yrs for child molesting - hence the pc character name change.

Further factual oversight is the disappointing lack of Somalian viewpoint, which ultimately limits the film. After the hundredth faceless Somalian is gunned down into the dust you get the feeling you're watching a remake of Zulu, with machine guns instead of spears. The defence will argue the film is from the view point of the American troops, yet in the original book it was the Somalian angle that gave it more texture (for example: Somali's complaining that the US troops famine effort was in order to feed them to fatten them up for slaughter).

Maybe Scott didn't see any room for the Somalain viewpoint. With the film portraying the art of war so well, there’s little time for anything else. With fourty odd speaking parts, character development also falls prone amongst all the explosions.

However, it’s far from a bias patriotic American war film, it deserves the Apocalypse Now stamp of ‘anti-war film’. Yet mentioning the film in the same sentence as Coppola’s war epic makes it easy to highlight the main shortcoming of Black Hawk Down - in it's dry depiction it carries little soul.

Nevertheless, it’s a powerful and accurate re-enactment of the battle of October 3rd 1993. It's almost a victim of it's own success - so real and intense is the warfare, you’ll come out the cinema feeling that you’ve been in a war, rather than at the movies. If this is your idea of fun, well you better get down the recruitment office and enlist now. ---David Michael
