She's The One

"Fluff--but smart, romantic, aritculate, extremely funny fluff."
3 stars

One of two movies me and my girlfriend agree on, "She's The One" is an enjoyable little movie about beer swigging bros trying to fumble effectively through their various relationships. If it sounds like "The Brothers McMullen," that's 'cause Ed Burns wrote and directed both. But I liked "The Brothers McMullen." And I like "She's the One."

Given, some of the dialogue is a bit stiff, and the acting occasionally leaves something to be desired (most notably in the case of Maxine Bahns, who got this role cause Burns was jamming her when he made the movie)--but it's all pulled off with lots of spirit and laughs, and, goddammit, I've got to have one movie that I love for no reason other than I can relate to it and I enjoy it.

I mean, I'm sick of being a smug, hypercritical bastard. I'm fifteen years old, and it's a lot of weight on my shoulders to always be right, to always hate everything--it's like always being designated driver at a bigass party. Everybody else is drinking and carrying on, and you're sitting there by yourself trying to resist the magnetic pull of sweet, sweet alcohol.

So while you all got smashed and broke into fits of hysteria when Jason Biggs fucked an apple pie, I was sitting at home, grinning a sly grin and watching "She's the One" again--reveling in the fact that my guilty-pleasure flick is actually a pretty good movie.

The plot is simple, and really can't even be touched on. The movie rambles along at its own slack pace, while the characters engage in long, inarticulate debates about sex and women and fishing and all that other good shit that guys talk about.

Doesn't sound so hot, does it? The dialogue is what really keeps it compelling throughout, though. Unlike that shit that Kevin Smith spews out and calls realistic slacker-speak, the characters that populate "She's the One" talk like real people, and that makes their somewhat strange dilemmas all the more delicious.

The atmosphere is the clincher. Vibrant and sunny, "She's the One" has been directed like a sitcom, but it works for the material. There are lots of little laughs and a few big ones ("You are an ugly bitch, and I pity you"), and the movie has a big, irresistable heart.

I guess I like this movie so much because it works as a romantic comedy and a drama you can sink your teeth into; the ideals that take center stage here are flighty and fairy-tailish, but they're handled with care and heart. The performances don't hurt either--the actors, Ed Burns and Jennifer Aniston in particular, are excellent in their roles and make the characters seem real. It's no secret that this kind of shit works best when it's got that spying-on-the-neighbors vibe.

All in all--fluff. But I like it. Cause I'm that kind of guy.
