"Like a windsock."

Morbid, to say the least, miniscule portrait of the titled-character who finds her boyfriend dead (a suicide) on the floor by their Christmas tree.

He bequeaths her his just-finished novel, and she instead submits it to a publisher under her name, empties his bank account and disposes of the body herself. A trip to Spain with her best friend ensues. Samantha Morton, as the lead character, has all the talent that many said Emily Watson possessed, but that I never saw. The film is meager, not tied down to much of a story, but this windsock has enough air blowing through it in a compelling direction that its wanderlust pumps some life into this portrait. Lynne Ramsay continues in her quest for the desolate and derelict after her last feature, Ratcatcher. What separates the two is Morvern Callar’s objective and free observation, removed from the pity request of the former movie. Draining as this one may be (also nicely filmed by Alwin H. Kuchler), it lacks Ramsay’s previous imposing and demanding nature. With Kathleen McDermott.
