"Garbage, but it's fun"
3 stars

Here's a little-known horror flick that succeeds in being weird and sleazy in all the right ways. This is not to say that it's a fantastic movie by any standards. For me, these kinds of drive-in leftovers tend to fall into two categories: "bad" and "not bad." The latter usually consists of cheesy micro-budgeters that stumble onto interesting effects--very often by accident. BEHIND LOCKED DOORS includes enough happy accidents to make it worth the bother, if you have nothing better to do on a Friday night.

This film (a South African production, says the IMDB, though there's nothing onscreen to indicate that) tosses in a full brace of anti-P.C. strangeness: rape, attempted rape, lesbianism, nudity, a human taxidermy museum, a catfight, lame dance music, go-go dancing, and a fat, bookish psycho who's the spitting image of--I wouldn't lie to you--Henry Kissinger. Mr. Kissinger and his screwball sister live alone in a creepy, isolated house where they regularly terrorize hapless females, ostensibly in the name of medical research. He's obsessed with "physical love," or some such cosmic balderdash, and his dotty monologue in which he reveals that he came to admire the female form while working as a mortician may be worth the price of rental by itself.

But his two latest victims object to being dragged into his dungeon, where they're forced to strip naked and answer endless questions about their ancestry. They spend most of the movie walking around half-naked while saying, "We've got to get out of here..." This is when they're not killing time by exploring woman-woman love ("You've got a nice figure"). It's all pretty warped, and I don't think anybody intended it to be taken seriously. I hope not, anyhow. A few sequences drag on unreasonably long, and it takes a while to get started; but it's not badly made, and the crazed doctor makes for all sorts of giggly fun. The surreal ending, which will not be spoiled here, makes no sense--but that's part of the appeal of movies like this.

Not necessarily a good movie, but it's good trash.
