Raising Victor Vargas

by Greg Muskewitz

"Slice o' New Yawk life."
3 stars

Sparse in concept and execution, Peter Sollet’s movie (developed out of a short film where he worked with some of the same actors) is a little slice of New York life, about Victor, a Lower East Side teen who loses face when his sister catches him with Fat Donna, and in seeking to refurbish his reputation, stakes out the hottie Juicy Judy at the neighborhood pool.

It predictably falls into domestic dysfunction — the younger sister whom he battles with, the younger brother who looks up to him (asking for advice about masturbation), the grandmother who battles with him, etc. — these are all themes that make no distinction in matters of ethnicity or milieu. One of the perks that does come not only from the New York slice, but from the independent film branch, is that Vargas is unornamented in commercialism and sensationalism; the characters all come across as real people that don’t need to be manipulated in situation-type comedy to get the dysfunction across. It’s still thinly funny, innocent, and brought forth through its realism, which give the small-time actors a much larger authenticity, but the movie as a whole seems to lack much more ambition. With Victor Razuk, Judy Marte, Altagracia Guzman, and Silvestre Rasuk.

[See it if you must.]
