"As warm and companionable as an evening with an old friend."
The Station Agent is a sweet, comic indie crowd pleaser about the deceptive safety of isolation and the power of friendships found where, and with whom, we least expect.Fin (Peter Dinklage) is a railroad enthusiast and a dwarf, who inherits a plot of land and a railroad station in New Foundland, NJ (aka The Middle of Nowhere). Olivia (Patricia Clarkson) is an artist grieving a broken marriage and the death of a child. Both find safe havens in this reclusive environment, each wanting nothing more than to be Left The Hell Alone.
Unfortunately, they are thrown together, literally, when she almost runs over him with her car -- twice.
Then, into their midst comes Joe (Bobby Cannavale), a voluble but immensely likeable Cuban hot-dog vendor to whom the ideas of solitude and silence are anathema. Joe is the one who brings the three together for outings like walking the tracks, chasing trains in his sandwich truck, and hosting dinner parties that feature great Cuban food and plenty of good weed.In the end, though, it is Fin who is the anchor, teaching -- and learning for himself -- the power of the helping hand and the comfort of solitude and silence among friends.
