Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace |

"Lucas strikes again."

Despite the occasional delve into the realm of childlike cinematography, Lucas has once again put into production a chapter the masses aren't likely to forget within the next century or two. However, I must make the all-too-common complaint of JarJar Binks, bringing a somewhat uncharacteristic brand of slap-stick humor to the epic. The voice was nothing if intolerable, and seemed to take on overtones of an Italian accent at times. Five minutes after they brought JarJar into the picture, I was ready to denounce not only the movie, but Lucas's future as a film-maker. However, by the end of the pod-race scene, I was whooping in delight along with the rest of the crowd, and by the end of the film I, too, was left begging for more.
Kudos to the casting manager, for Liam Neeson's role. Neeson fit the role of the Jedi very well, bringing with him the air of nobility befitting his character. Queen Amadala's performance I find hard to make comment on, simply because there wasn't enough there to critique. Ewen McGregor also did a fine job, and I expect, by the end of the next film, for his skills to have gone from fine to incredible. And, lastly, Darth Maul. I've heard rumors of his return in the next film, and I hope they are founded. It seemed to me that Maul was on stage for no more than 7 minutes in the film's two hour running time. There, again, simply wasn't enough time dedicated to make Maul's character palpable to the imagination. But, as I've already stated, the film was incredible well done, the fight scenes were absolutely unparalleled, and the acting was superb.Well done, Lucas, you've certainly given me a thirst for the things yet to come…
