Okay ... there was a point when I thought that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, OUT OF SIGHT, and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (in that order) were the most overrated movies of the year. Then, the Oscars were announced. There is now one clear winner. I have never before seen a movie so cliche-filled get lavished with so much praise. I mean, yes, PRIVATE RYAN was just as cliched, but in a genre that was all but dead, and so the cliches were lost upon most of the movie going public, I'm sure. But come on ... how many times is a girl going to choose the asshole guy over the struggling artist? That and Geoffrey Rush is a big overactor. This enhanced his performance in SHINE, but hinders it greatly here.
All that being said ... Judi Dench deserves the Oscar, Gwyneth Paltrow (deserving or not) will probably win, and Joseph Fiennes was robbed [Much as I hate to say this deserved another nomination.] The screenplay will win, and probably deserved it even before the Academy fixed the category so that it was the only *good* (never mind great) script nominated. The fact that so many people have chosen to ignore just how cliched it is shows that the director and writers (mostly Stoppard, no doubt) are quite talented at distracting.Oh, and note to Ben Affleck, re: haircut in SiL ...
it was supposed to be the 1590's, not the 1990's. Sorry, dude, but they did not have buzz cuts back then.
