"Before Riding Giants, there was the (superior) Step Into Liquid."
Step into Liquid is an exhilarating paean to surfing and a gorgeous travelogue, in its own right.Documentarian Dana Brown, himself a second-generation surfer (his father being Bruce Brown of Endless Summer fame), takes viewers on a glorious tour of the world's oceans and beaches, from Malibu to the South China Sea and Tahiti, from Maui to Lake Michigan, Ireland, and Rapa Nui, for some stunning action sequences and interviews with surfers whose entire lives seem to be spent in search of the next wave.
My only quibble with the movie is that some of the interviews with The Surfing Faithful do tend to get a bit hippy-dippy and Zen for their own good. ("Waves are where you find them," and "The perfect wave is a choice," are a couple sample observations.)Even so, this is 88 minutes well spent in watching athletes perform their spectacular, and often death defying, feats in some of the most breathtaking locations on God's earth.
