Under the Tuscan Sun

"Put your mind on autopilot and enjoy the scenery!"
4 stars

Diane Lane and Italy seem made for each other, and both shine (again, as they did in A Little Romance) in Under the Tuscan Sun, a gorgeous trifle loosely based upon Frances Mayes' bestselling memoirs about her restoration of a villa in the Tuscan hamlet of Cortona.

In fact, the villa, Bramasole, is about the only thing book and movie have in common, Mayes being a middle-aged, married professor, who purchased the long-abandoned house in Italy with her husband and supervised the restoration from their home in San Francisco before taking up residence abroad.

Here, she's reworked by writer-director Audrey Wells as a newly divorced book critic who travels to Tuscany on a gay bus tour ticket given to her by lesbian pals Patti (Sandra Oh) and Grace (Kate Walsh) when Patti becomes too pregnant to travel.

Romance, of course, ensues, in the form of hunky Italian Marcello (Raoul Bova), and Patti and Frances are tearfully reunited when the even-more-pregnant friend (now apparently A-OK to board a plane) arrives on the villa's doorstep after her own breakup with Grace.

Still, while the storyline in the screen version of Under the Tuscan Sun is largely generic and forgettable, and concocted from bits of fabricated fluff, the film is still more than worth seeing for its breathtaking tour of Italy, not just the Tuscan countryside, but also highlighting the beauty of Florence, Siena, Montepulciano, Rome, and Positano.

In supporting roles, Oh (Double Happiness, Further Tales of the City, Big Fat Liar) and Lindsay Duncan (Traffik) add greatly to the proceedings as, respectively, Lane's Chinese-American buddy from San Francisco, and the somewhat wacky British actress she meets in Florence.

All in all, while unlikely to make many Ten Best lists at the end of the year, Under the Tuscan Sun is mighty easy on the eyes and just as easy to like.
