"Look closer."
4 stars

If you're really old or really grumpy or maybe some unholy combination of both, you're probably asking yourself why I've gone to the trouble of reviewing "Big Daddy" when about twenty three others already have. The answer is simple: No one else is willing to call this anything more than fast food cinema. Hoity-toity critics will never understand, nor recognize, Adam Sandler's true brilliance. Low level critics will grudgingly admit to liking his movies--but just barely, they want to be sure you know. And me? I'm of the opinion that greatness can be found just about anywhere, and "Big Daddy" has it in spades--fast food or not.

It's somewhat irksome to the casual moviegoer when a "respectable" film like American Beauty comes along and everyone scrambles to identify with it--they feel safe in doing so because the majority of critics have praised it and awarded it and generally branded it aesthetically acceptable. Suddenly, you're not just watching a movie and enjoying it; you're partaking in a communal experience, plugging in to humanity and whatnot.

That's all such bullshit. American Beauty was a well made film with some good points, but it was no less obvious and heavy handed than...well, your average Adam Sandler vehicle. But it's not deemed "cool" to like Sandler, is it? No, if you like Adam Sandler, you must be juvenile, you must be immature, you must be some bottom feeding pop culture scavenger. Nevermind that films like The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy are sweet and knowing and funny and romantic, often all in the same scene.

I say, let us be silenced no longer by art house purists, by uptight critics, by those who look down their noses at all things that don't flaunt their intelligence with a smirk and a wink. It's time to come forth and admit that, yes, there is something very, very great about "Big Daddy." More than any other film I saw in 1999, it pulses with undeniable, completely genuine emotion; it's the most earnest, unironic treat you're likely to come across at the local video store on a bored Saturday night.

And guess what? It's funny as hell.

The story is simple--Sandler is Sonny Koufax, a middle aged slacker who adopts a kid in order to keep his girlfriend. The plan backfires, hilarity ensues. It sounds threadbare, and as a concept, it is. But as a film, it works, because everything is padded with sincerity; when Sandler tells Joey Lauren Adams, as his doe eyed romantic interest, that he's fallen in love with the kid, you really believe it. He may not have studied under Strasberg, and chances are he'll never win an Oscar, but Sandler has conviction, and that wins over technical talent any old day of the week.

What really sets Big Daddy apart from its low-brow peers is the melancholy that lurks just below the surface. More than anything else, this is the story of a lonely guy who just wants a companion, be it a girlfriend, a drinking buddy, or a six year old child. It's telling that nobody complained about the mildly unhappy ending--it may not be the fairy tale style wrap up we've come to expect from Sandler, but that matters not because it stays consistent with the rest of the picture. It sounds strange to say so, but Big Daddy is a film of gentle sadness.

In closing, go the "cool" route too many times and you just end up cold. You can rent "American Beauty" for the sixth time and marvel once again at Kevin Spacey's performance. I'll be on the other side of the cafeteria, reveling in my dorkiness with an Adam Sandler lunch box.
