"Oh...Come on....ARE YOU THAT BLIND?"
2 stars

The integrity of what is being reported to us is currently more important than ever. We need to believe in those that are telling us what we need to know, so you can imagine the panic that set in at ĎNew Republicí magazine when it turned out that Stephen Glass had, whoopsie, been making up virtually everything he wrote.

From a plot point of view, this had incredible potential. On many occasions, I was genuinely interested by how this was going to run out. But more often than I was interested, I was just bored by how unbelievably stupid the on screen action was. From around the first ten minutes, youíre aware that something is not right. After half an hour, youíd think that someone had him sussed and would then try to get him discredited. After an hour, youíre wondering how the only person who only has any vague suspicions is the editor, and even then barely acts on them. By the end, youíre dumbfounded by how long it took the entire staff of one the most prestigious and intelligent American publications to realise that he was a lying rat.

I can understand that he was meant to be universally loved by everyone in the office thanks to his ridiculously slimy compliments that fall out of his mouth with terrets-esque regularity, but surely there must be a line. High-level journalism is not a career where you make friends. No matter where you are, there is always someone wanting to be in your place, and will think nothing of ripping you apart to get there. So to try and believe that not one person in the entire staff jumped on the first discrepancy in his work in order to bring him down is hard to believe.

The cast could have been better. Seeming to act as more of a check list for horror movies from five years ago than a roll call for the red carpet (hey look! Itís him from Roadkill! (Or joyride, depending on which side of the pond you skim your stones from) and look! Itís him from Godzilla! Etc); the cast put in performances that range from competent to laughable. Hayden Christensen is just so icky that you find it hard to believe how anyone could love him. Obviously a pathological liar (and a frequently bad one at that), his constant barrage of compliments and child-like attitude towards his crimes make it difficult to believe that no one just slapped him and told him to grow up and face up to what heís done.

It was nice in theory, but it is just very hard to believe that it could have possibly gone on for that long when the main character is as dislikeable as he is. A gripping story was in there somewhere, but the painful naivety of the cast make sure that it is kept safely hidden.
