"Who said Miike Takashi never disappoints?"
2 stars

Miike Takashi is admittedly an acquired taste. He cranks out on average five films a year, so in amongst that there's always going to be a few stinkers. Gozu is just such a stinker - an oddball road trip that takes in a woman with an unending supply of breast milk, a man witha goat head, a Pomeranian assassin and an insane gangster. Oh, and a woman giving birth to a fully grown man. Sorry Miike, but if you're going to go crazy ass weirdo on me, you need more than shock value to get over.

We open on Ozaki (Shô Aikawa), a gangster who has decided to defend his boss against what he says 'could be a trained attack dog'. It's in actual fact a random squirt dog, grabbed out of the hands of a passing girl and repeatedly slammed against the glass window of a store. For comedic effect. Okay, I'll admit, it was funny. But I don't think I laughed again over the proceeding two hours.

In fact, I just checked my notes, and I can confirm that I didn't laugh again. In fact, I have the following scrawled in bvarely legibile handwriting:

* What the hell is with the breast milk obsession?
* I don't understand any of this. Did I miss something?
* Okay, my ass is really hurting now. This is dire.

What more needs to be said? Okay, a little more detail. Ozaki is nuts. He's lost the plot and is being driven out to the country by his 'little brother' Minami (Hideki Sone), so that he can put the older gangster out of his misery. But Minami somehow manages to fulfill his duties earlier than planned, accidentally, when he stops short and causes Ozaki to crack his head on the dash. He stops at a diner, props the dead guy in the back seat and goes in for a drink.

when he comes back, the body is gone. Weirdness ensues. Weirdness that includes a hotel run by a woman who sells truckloads of milk to the locals, all of which comes from her breast. If you've got some kind of breast milk fetish, this is the movie for you. Personally, I could have done with it.

With scene after scene of imagery designed to shock and confuse, but never actually inform, Miike Takashi succeeds only ingiving his audience an optical hernia, popping eyeballs left and right with things that I can only describe as random. Well, I could also describe them as silly, but the 'art crowd' would claim I'd simply missed the point.

Actually, no they wouldn't. This movie blows. It's a spectacle, but that's all. Wait for the weekly rental opportunity, or spend your money on Takashi's infinitely better films Audition and Ichi The Killer.
