"Even more hilarious than actual porn."
5 stars

Dear fans of the mockumentary form, - Guess what is being exposed this time, friends. That's right. Someone has found the good sense to turn the mockumentary lens on the porn industry, and the results are fairly stimulating indeed. (This review is not intended for young readers or easily offended adults.)

The film follows a hapless crew trying, mostly in vain, to get their latest porn title shot. The director (Kyle Schickner, writer and director of the actual film, as well) tries his best to keep the crew on task, keep the talent happy, and keep the documentary filmmakers following him around from getting too much underfoot. His wife (Kandeyce Jorden) is the production designer who catches the eye of one of the models, aka actors. August Mann (Christopher May) is the NYU educated cinematographer who doesn't understand why he has to haul his own equipment. Stephan (Mark Hawkins) is his right hand man, helping to decide things such as where the light is best to place the "fuck couch." Danny (Curt Olsen) is the gopher. It's his job to supply the lube, douches, and enemas every morning. Reggie (Hosea Simmons) is the make-up guy expected to work magic in a matter of minutes.

In addition, there are several actual adult film actors on hand as the adult film actors in the movie. Some are there for cameos. Others play more substantial roles, both in the action and as part of the documentary. Most of them, male and female, spend some time naked, even though much of the sex is merely implied. The talk, though, is pretty graphic. I think you probably already know whether you are a likely audience for this movie.

Now, having set all of that up, I laughed more in these ninety minutes than I have in a good while. I'm still laughing three days later. As fans of this style of film are aware, it is often the manner in which things are expressed, in addition to the actual words, that is so funny. These characters, all of them, have great moments of laughable confusion, mind-bending self-discovery, and the sheer hilarity of a deliciously skewed worldview. When you are comparing porn to Shakespeare, the train has left the tracks. When a porn actress wants to talk about the Dickensian aspects of a story before gleefully shouting something like "Let's get fucking!" you have some moments of pure comedy gold to be mined. The director compares himself to a Willy Wonka for adults, except that instead of "orange-faced midgets," he has naked men and women who are full-sized. He imagines his audience has some sort of dysfunction in their sex lives, and he dreams of putting the "function" back into that dysfunction for them.

All of the performances are pretty spot-on, but my favorite parts came from the back and forth between Christopher May and Mark Hawkins. Their characters have a contentious, love-hate relationship, and the actors do a great job of giving it some life and depth. They were my favorite, though some of the adult film actors were also amazingly funny. The man behind the whole thing, Kyle Schickner, also has a great and subtle way with a tossed-away joke that finds you laughing an extra moment or two later.

There is only one appropriate way to sum this movie: fucking hilarious. If it sounds like something you might like, please check it out.
