"Pop quiz time!"

Question 1: What's harder than adapting a 500 page James Ellroy novel with a cast of dozens and a plot for which the words "deeply convoluted" would rank as the understatement of this (or any) millenium?

Answer: Writing a concise review. "LA Confidential" centers around three complicated, basically unlikeable men--Bud White (Russel Crowe), a brutal, widely respected cop who's driven by events in the past to purge the world of wife-beaters and no-goodniks in general; Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), a career-minded pip squeak driven by events in the past to win lots of medals for valor; and Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey), the big Hollywood cop on the block, who's forgotten what events are supposed to be driving him and now concentrates solely on the small-time fame that comes with working behind the scenes on a popular cop show.

These three very different officers of the law, throughout the course of the movie, must fight, think, and eventually work together against the forces that at once seperate and bind them together. The lesson learnt at the end of the whole ugly mess? When it comes right down to it, there is no line between those who uphold the laws and those who merely abide by them. We're all subject to judgement, justice, and extreme police brutality.

"LA Confidential" is one of the great films of the nineties; it's the kind of movie I just don't expect them to make anymore. The only way to get this review out is to boil the film's magnificence into three basic ingredients: the cast, the crew, and the story.

THE CAST: One of the best I've seen in years; sparkling through and through. Nobody hits a wrong note, every movement and word rings authentic, and even though none of these people are exactly moral (or even aware that such things as ethics exist), you're drawn to them by the magnetism of the actors. Kevin Spacey is the most obvious example; playing the role of a vain, corrupt cop, he turns the character into something so much more than an interesting villain--Vincennes is a man who has lost his way, but because of Spacey's honest, brave work, becomes a hero nonetheless.

THE CREW: Curtis Hanson + Brian Helgeland = Fucking Geniuses! Who else could have possibly tamed the wild beast that is Ellroy's book and come out with such a wonderful end product? And who but Hanson could direct the thing and keep a leash on it, making the story his own? "LA Confidential" is structured perfectly--talk is a constant throughout the film, making the few action sequences stick out and become all the more exciting.

THE STORY: A lot (and I mean A LOT) of elements have been stripped down from Ellroy's original narrative, something that rather annoyed me the first time I watched the film . Now that I've viewed it again, the cuts don't seem as harsh, and I see them as perfectly justifiable. If Hanson and Helgeland had kept in half of the plot points in the book, a) the story wouldn't have been workable in the least and b) Hanson's work would have gone largely unseen--the MPAA would have slapped that sucker with an NC-17 faster than you can say "Explicit pornographic detail doesn't go over well with the ratings board."

And that's my spiel about "LA Confidential." Words simply don't do it justice. Check it out for yourself if you haven't already--this one is a must for any and all film fans. Sheer perfection in celluloid form.
