"Film Noir at its best"
5 stars

Here is a tight, well written film about a group of men, some corrupt cops, and a femme fatale.

L.A. Confidential is an adaptation of the brilliant James Ellory book. Written for the screen by Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland, this movie winds its way through two and a half hours without losing the audiences attention.
Kevin Spacey, Russel Crowe and Guy Pierce play three cops in 50’s Hollywood. All have different motivations for getting the case solved. What is the case?
Spacey plays Jack Vincennes as a smart, slick detective who is also a “consultant” on the fictitious show “Badge of Honor” (ala’ Dragnet). Russell Crowe (the real star here) plays tough guy cop Bud White, who uses some strong-arming to get what he wants from a criminal. Crowe slyly makes White likeable while seeming dangerous. Guy Pierce plays Ed Exley, a straight arrow who likes to do things “by the book” and isn’t above playing politics in the department if it means he will get ahead.
Mob boss Mickey Cohen has been arrested and there is a vacancy in organized crime. A string of murders happen ending up in a shooting at an all-night diner that claims the life of an ex-cop, Bud White’s former partner. Before anyone can get very far with the investigation, three supposed murderers are arrested for the shooting but something doesn’t sit right with Vincennes, White or Exley. They all set out to dig deeper into the crime with some violent consequences and an undercover prostitution ring who’s workers are hookers “cut” to look like celebrities. Kim Basinger gives the performance of her career as Lynn Braken the Veronica Lake look-alike.

To watch the movie is breathtaking. The cinematography is beautiful and the characters seem to jump off the screen. L.A. Confidential is a great film with an inticrate plot that keeps you glued to the screen. It belongs in film history with Chinatown and The Godfather.
